There is no question that fire plans are important. The National Fire Code, Section 2.8, requires a fire safety plan for every building classified as Group A or B occupancy. These plans must be kept up-to-date and reviewed at least once every 12 months.
Penalties for noncompliance include stiff fines and imprisonment. Within the past five years, for example, the province of Ontario has doubled its fine to $50,000. The Criminal Code calls for prison sentences up to five years for building owners found negligent.
A complete Fire Safety Plan consists of:
Layouts of the interior and exterior
Safe meeting areas
Locations of shut off valves and hazardous materials
Fire drill procedures
Information about mobility-impaired persons in the building
Important contact numbers
Fortunately for local owners, managers and tenants, Canada offers some of the most advanced technology in this field. In fact, we are the first country in the world to create Web-enabled fire plan applications.
Digital plans are much faster to create and maintain, and having them online means they can be updated anywhere with an internet connection. As an added bonus, fire departments can download these en route to a fire and always have the most current information.
